About the mission

The Ghana Takoradi Mission serves part of Ghana's southern coast, including the Takoradi area. Takoradi is part of the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi, known as Ghana's Oil City.

English and Twi are the main mission languages. English is widely used in education, business, and church settings, while Twi is one of Ghana's widely spoken local languages.

A short history of the area

Sekondi and Takoradi grew around Dutch and English forts built during the 17th century. Sekondi included Fort Orange, Fort Witsen, and Fort Sekondi. The Dutch left in 1872, and the European settlements later declined. A railroad was built in 1903 to carry minerals and timber to the coast.

Takoradi received Ghana's first deepwater seaport in 1928. Sekondi and Takoradi merged on December 2, 1946. Oil discoveries in the region in 2010 helped give the city its nickname, Oil City.

The Church here

1964Reverend Joseph William Billy Johnson began preaching from the Book of Mormon and later helped organize 10 congregations before the Church was officially organized in Ghana.
1978Church President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation extending priesthood ordination to all worthy men and directed that missionaries be sent to Ghana.
1978On December 5, missionaries Edwin and Janath Cannon and Rendell and Rachel Mabey arrived in Ghana to establish formal Church branches.
1978On December 9, Edwin Cannon and Rendell Mabey performed the first 125 baptisms in Ghana at Cape Coast.
1978On December 12, another 124 converts were baptized in Takoradi, and a branch was formed there.
1989-90The government banned the activities of several religious organizations, including the Church. Ghanaian Latter-day Saints continued practicing their faith in their homes for more than a year.
1998Church President Gordon B. Hinckley visited Ghana and announced that a temple would be built in Accra, the first temple in West Africa.
2004The Accra Ghana Temple was dedicated.
2023-24The Ghana Takoradi Mission was announced on November 1, 2023, and began serving areas previously served by the Ghana Cape Coast Mission on July 1, 2024.

Fun facts

During World War II, RAF Takoradi was a staging point for British aircraft traveling toward Egypt. Spitfires were assembled there and flown through Nigeria and Sudan to Libya.
Takoradi Technical Institute has a fabrication laboratory equipped by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, described as the first of its kind in Africa.
The Albert Bosomtwi-Sam Fishing Harbour is one of the largest fishing ports in the region, and fishing is the city's most common occupation.
