A short history of the area
Tegucigalpa became Honduras's permanent capital on October 30, 1880. Tegucigalpa and Comayagüela were joined into the Central District in 1937, and the two cities are separated by the Choluteca River.
The Church here
- Early 1950sElders Spencer W. Kimball and Marion G. Romney visited Honduras to evaluate prospects for the Church.
- Early 1950sThe visiting apostles left Church literature with a hotel waiter who was later baptized.
- December 1952The first missionaries arrived in Honduras.
- March 1953Missionaries baptized the first converts and organized the first congregation.
- 1972Seminary and institute began in Honduras.
- 1980The Honduras Tegucigalpa Mission was created, and Church membership in Honduras reached 6,300.
- June 1991Honduras was dedicated for missionary work.
- 1997The Honduras Comayaguela Mission was created as a division of the Honduras Tegucigalpa Mission.
