A short history of the area
Kingston became Jamaica’s administrative capital in 1872. Kingston Harbour is a natural harbor, and the city remains a central place in the island’s history and civic life.
The Church here
- 1853The first known Latter-day Saint missionaries to serve in Jamaica arrived in Kingston on January 10. The first three converts were baptized on January 25.
- 1970The first Jamaican branch was created in March.
- 1978Full-time missionaries returned to Jamaica in November.
- 1979Jamaica was dedicated for missionary work by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
- 1983The Jamaica District was organized on February 5.
- 1985The Jamaica Kingston Mission was organized on July 1.
- 2013Kevin and Nadine Brown were called to preside over the Jamaica Kingston Mission.
- 2014Elder Jeffrey R. Holland organized the Kingston Jamaica Stake on June 8.
