A short history of the area

Mexico City began as Tenochtitlan, a city founded by the Mexica people on islands in Lake Texcoco in 1325 or 1327. After the siege of Tenochtitlan in 1521, the city was rebuilt according to Spanish urban standards. The municipality of Mexico City was established in 1524, and the city was officially known as Ciudad de México by 1585.

The city became the Federal District in 1824 and was officially renamed Ciudad de México, or CDMX, in 2016. Today, Mexico City sits on the former bed of Lake Texcoco and is one of the largest cities in the Americas.

  1. 1875Seven missionaries were called to open a mission in Mexico.
  2. 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
  3. 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
  4. 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
  5. 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, to become the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
  6. 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City.
  7. 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
