A short history of the area

Lansing was founded and settled in 1835. In 1836, William and Jerry Ford bought 290 acres and planned a community called Biddle City, though the plan failed after the Panic of 1837. Lansing Township was chosen as Michigan’s state capital in 1847 because of its central location and Detroit’s vulnerability to British attack.

The settlement became a city on February 15, 1859. Lansing later became an important automobile center. The Olds Motor Vehicle Company was founded there in 1897, and Ransom E. Olds later founded the REO Motor Car Company.

The Church here

  1. 1831Men sent by Joseph Smith baptized 22 people in Michigan, including a deacon from a local pastor’s congregation.
  2. 1834Joseph Smith visited Michigan.
  3. 1844Joseph Smith was murdered by mobs in Illinois, ending a period of Church advancement in Michigan. Several members began traveling west with other Saints.
  4. 1928The Church completed its first building in Detroit in December.
  5. 1939Missionaries recalled from foreign areas because of World War II formed a chorus that performed public concerts.
  6. 1960A second stake was formed in Lansing.
  7. 1973The Michigan Mission was created and was later changed to the Michigan Lansing Mission.
