A short history of the area

Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701, when Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, Alphonse de Tonty, and more than 100 French settlers began building Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit. Sainte-Anne de Détroit was founded two days later and is the second-oldest continuously operating Roman Catholic parish in the United States.

British troops took control in 1760 and shortened the settlement's name to Detroit. After Michigan joined the Union in 1837, Detroit served as Michigan's first capital. The city later became a center of automobile production and is now known for design, music, sports, and its international connection with Windsor, Ontario.

  1. 1831Men sent by Joseph Smith baptized 22 people in Michigan, including a deacon from an unfriendly pastor's congregation.
  2. 1834Joseph Smith visited Michigan.
  3. 1844Joseph Smith was murdered by mobs in Illinois, ending a period of Church advancement in Michigan.
  4. 1877Cyrus Wheelock was sent to Michigan as mission president, and missionary work reopened after a period without an organized Church presence.
  5. 1913The Church sent the Arthur Snow family from Utah to Michigan to manage its salt mine business in Detroit.
  6. 1915Northern States Mission president German E. Ellsworth organized the Detroit Branch on April 21, with Archie Alger as president.
  7. 1928The Church's first building in Detroit was completed in December.
  8. 1952The first stake in Detroit was formed, with George Romney as president.
