About the mission

The Micronesia Guam Mission is based in Barrigada, Guam, and is part of the Church’s work in Micronesia. Barrigada is near Guam’s main airport and several important roads.

A short history of the area

Barrigada is centrally located on Guam near Routes 8, 10, and 16. Mount Barrigada rises nearly 200 meters above sea level, and Barrigada Heights sits on its western slope.

From August 2 to 4, 1944, United States Marine Corps troops fought Japanese forces at present-day Barrigada Heights during the Battle of Guam. In the mid-1990s, the former Naval Air Station Agana land and buildings were transferred to the Government of Guam for public use. Tiyan High School opened in Barrigada in August 2014.

1944A servicemen’s group was organized on Guam during World War II.
1945Four small congregations of Church servicemen were organized on Guam.
1951Church members raised funds to purchase land and two Quonset huts for a chapel and classrooms.
1953The Guam congregation’s facilities were dedicated, and the congregation became part of the Oahu Hawaii Stake.
1957Missionaries arrived in Guam in August.
1977President William Cannon sent missionaries to Micronesia, and the first Chamorro converts joined the Church on Guam.
1980The Micronesia Guam Mission was created on April 1.
