A short history of the area
The United States acquired St. Louis through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Lewis and Clark left from St. Louis in May 1804 and returned there on September 23, 1806. The city later hosted the 1904 World’s Fair and Summer Olympics.
The Church here
- 1831Joseph Smith identified Independence in Jackson County as the gathering place for Church members.
- 1834Zion’s Camp arrived in Missouri to protect Church members, but a storm prevented a confrontation and the camp was later disbanded.
- 1838Far West became Church headquarters. Violence followed in Missouri, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs issued the extermination order, and Joseph Smith was arrested on October 31.
- 1839Between 12,000 and 15,000 Church members fled Missouri. Some settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, while others moved to St. Louis.
- 1844The earliest branch of the Church in St. Louis was established.
- 1849A conference was formed in St. Louis with 3,000 to 4,000 members.
- 1854The St. Louis Stake was organized.
- 1976Governor Christopher S. Bond rescinded the extermination order issued by Governor Boggs 138 years earlier.
- 1977The St. Louis Missouri Mission was organized.
