A short history of the area
English troops took control in 1664 and renamed the settlement New York. The city served as the national capital from 1785 to 1790. In 1898, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island joined to form the modern city.
The Church here
- 1820Joseph Smith Jr., age 14, experienced a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ in a grove of trees near his family’s farm in Palmyra.
- 1823An angel directed Joseph Smith to a hill in Manchester, where he found golden plates containing the Book of Mormon.
- April–June 1829Joseph Smith produced a translation of the Book of Mormon.
- March 1830The Book of Mormon was first offered for sale in Egbert Grandin’s printing shop in Palmyra.
- April 6, 1830Believers gathered at the home of Mary and Peter Whitmer in Fayette, New York, to formally establish the Church of Christ.
- 1838The Church was officially named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- 1963Six missionaries reopened missionary work in Manhattan, organized the Manhattan District, and made plans for a new mission.
- 2012Following Hurricane Sandy, Church members formed Helping Hands teams and helped clear debris from homes and community structures damaged by flooding.
