A short history of the area
Boston became an important center of American history. Boston Latin School was founded in 1635, the Boston Massacre took place in 1770, and the Boston Tea Party took place in 1773. Boston was incorporated as a city on March 19, 1822.
The Church here
- 1832Samuel H. Smith and Orson Hyde reached Boston in June, baptized seven people, and preached in nearby Lynn.
- 1832By the end of the year, branches had been established in Boston and New Rowley.
- 1835Missionaries organized the Massachusetts Conference in Bradford.
- 1839Church President Joseph Smith passed through Boston on his way to Washington, D.C.
- 1843George J. Adams’s nightly preachings drew an audience of approximately 1,200 in Charlestown.
- 1894The area was reopened to missionaries.
- 1930Cambridge became the headquarters for the New England States Mission.
- 2000The Boston Massachusetts Temple was completed and dedicated as the Church’s 100th operating temple.
