A short history of the area
Montreal was founded as Ville-Marie on May 17, 1642, by French colonists led by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve. The city later became part of British North America, was incorporated as a city in 1832, and hosted the Summer Olympics in 1976.

- September 1830Joseph Smith, Sr., and Don Carlos Smith preached in towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1833The first missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrived in Quebec.
- 1919The Canadian Mission was organized, and missionaries began serving permanently in Montreal.
- 1928The Montreal Branch was organized with James McCance as president. It was primarily English-speaking.
- 1961Six French-speaking missionaries were sent to areas near Quebec.
- 1964The Montreal Second Branch, the first French-speaking branch in Canada, was organized.
- 1969A branch was organized in Quebec City.
- 1972The Quebec Mission was created and was later renamed the Canada Montreal Mission.
- 1978The Montreal Quebec Stake, the first French-speaking stake in North America, was organized.
