A short history of the area

The Syracuse area was home to the Onondaga Nation, one of the five nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, for centuries before European arrival. French missionaries arrived in the mid-17th century, and Simon Le Moyne established the mission of Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha on the northeast shore of Onondaga Lake.

Syracuse was formally established in 1820, incorporated as a village in 1825, and incorporated as a city in 1847. Salt production gave it the nickname The Salt City, while the Erie Canal helped make it an important transportation crossroads.

The Church here

  1. 1820Joseph Smith Jr. experienced a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ in a grove near his family’s farm in Palmyra.
  2. 1823An angel directed Joseph Smith to a hill in Manchester, where he found the golden plates containing the Book of Mormon.
  3. April–June 1829Joseph Smith produced a translation of the Book of Mormon.
  4. March 1830The Book of Mormon was first offered for sale in Egbert Grandin’s printing shop in Palmyra.
  5. April 6, 1830Believers gathered at the home of Mary and Peter Whitmer in Fayette, New York, to formally establish the Church of Christ.
  6. 1838The Church was officially named The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  7. January 26, 1964The New York Syracuse Mission was organized.
  8. July 1, 2019The New York Utica Mission and the New York Rochester Mission combined to form the New York Syracuse Mission.
