A short history of the area
In 1793, Governor John Graves Simcoe established York as the capital of Upper Canada. York became the City of Toronto on March 6, 1834. The city became Ontario's capital during Canadian Confederation in 1867, and six surrounding municipalities joined the City of Toronto in 1998.
The Church here
- 1830Joseph Smith, Sr., and Don Carlos Smith preached in towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1830–1850Approximately 2,500 Canadians joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mostly in Upper Canada.
- 1919The Canadian Mission was created with headquarters in Toronto.
- 1960The Toronto Ontario Stake was organized on August 14 as the first stake east of Alberta and the Church's 300th stake.
- 1974The mission in Ontario became the Canada Toronto Mission.
- 1976The Toronto Ontario Stake was realigned to create the Toronto East Stake on June 13.
- 1993The Canada Toronto East Mission was created on July 1.
- 2005–2008Tad R. Callister served as president of the Canada Toronto East Mission.
