A short history of the area
Governor John Graves Simcoe established York as the capital of Upper Canada in 1793. York became the City of Toronto in 1834, and Toronto became Ontario's capital during Canadian Confederation in 1867. In 1998, several former municipalities were joined to create the present City of Toronto.
The Church here
- September 1830Joseph Smith, Sr., and Don Carlos Smith preached in several Canadian towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1830–1850About 2,500 Canadians joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mainly in Upper Canada and other eastern Canadian communities.
- 1919The Canadian Mission was established, with Nephi Jensen as its president. Branches were already functioning in Toronto, Hamilton, and Brantford.
- 1955The Toronto Branch was divided, creating the Toronto East and Toronto West Branches.
- 1960The Toronto Ontario Stake was organized, the first stake in eastern Canada.
- 1993The Canada Toronto Mission was divided on July 1, creating the Canada Toronto East Mission and the Canada Toronto West Mission.
