A short history of the area

Aba is a city in Nigeria associated with the Aba River. It is the main city connected with the Nigeria Aba Mission.

The name Aba is also used for places in several other countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Russia, Japan, Hungary, and China.

The Church here

  1. 1959Honesty John Ekong began receiving Church magazines and pamphlets after requesting literature and missionaries.
  2. 1960Glen G. Fisher visited Nigeria and reported that local congregations sincerely wanted the Church established there.
  3. 1978Following President Spencer W. Kimball’s revelation, the Church was established in Nigeria and worthy members of African descent could receive priesthood ordination and temple blessings.
  4. 1979Mabey and Cannon organized the Cross River State District in Calabar, the first district in Nigeria, with Ime O. Eduok as president.
  5. 1980The Africa West Mission was organized, including Nigeria and Ghana.
  6. 1985The Africa West Mission was renamed the Nigeria Lagos Mission.
  7. 1988The Nigeria Aba Mission was created on July 1 when the Nigeria Lagos Mission was divided.
  8. 1988The Aba Nigeria Stake was organized on May 15, the first stake in Nigeria and the first in West Africa.
  9. 2005The Aba Temple was dedicated.
