The Nigeria Port Harcourt South Mission is based in Port Harcourt, a major city along the Bonny River in southern Nigeria.

English and Igbo are spoken in the mission. English is widely used for communication, while Igbo is an important regional language.

A short history of the area

Port Harcourt was founded in 1912 by Frederick Lugard as a port for exporting coal discovered at Enugu. The city was named in August 1913 for Lewis Harcourt, who was then Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Crude oil was discovered at Oloibiri in 1956, and Port Harcourt exported Nigeria’s first shipload of crude oil in 1958. Today, the city lies in the oil-rich Niger Delta and is also known as the Garden City.

  1. 1978Following President Spencer W. Kimball’s revelation, the Church was established in Nigeria and worthy members of African descent could receive priesthood ordination and temple blessings.
  2. 1979The Cross River State District was organized in Calabar, the first district in Nigeria, with Ime O. Eduok as president.
  3. 1980The Africa West Mission was organized on July 1, including Nigeria and Ghana.
  4. 1985The Africa West Mission was renamed the Nigeria Lagos Mission on July 1.
  5. 1988The Nigeria Port Harcourt Mission was established on July 1.
  6. 2005The Aba Temple was dedicated.
  7. 2018More than 160,000 Latter-day Saints lived in Nigeria, 40 years after the first baptisms there.
