A short history of the area
Uyo has a tropical monsoon climate. Temperatures generally range from 21 °C to 31 °C, and the city receives heavy rainfall during the year. The city’s motto is “Land of Promise.”
The Church here
- Early 1960sChurch leaders attempted to establish a mission in Nigeria after Nigerians organized unofficial congregations.
- 1978Following President Spencer W. Kimball’s revelation, the Church was established in Nigeria and people of African descent could receive priesthood ordination and temple blessings.
- November 21, 1978The Aboh Branch was created in Ikot Eyo, the first official branch in the Efik-Ibibio homelands.
- 1979The Cross River State District was organized in Calabar, the first district in Nigeria, with Ime O. Eduok as president.
- 1980The Africa West Mission was organized, covering Nigeria and Ghana.
- 1988The Nigeria Lagos Mission was divided to create the Nigeria Aba Mission.
- March 9, 2002The First Presidency announced the Nigeria Uyo Mission and the Nigeria Ibadan Mission.
- 2005The Aba Temple was dedicated.
- 2018More than 160,000 Latter-day Saints lived in Nigeria, 40 years after the first baptisms there.
