A short history of the area
Bismarck became the capital of the Dakota Territory in 1883 and the capital of North Dakota when the state joined the Union in 1889. Today it stands across the Missouri River from Mandan and is North Dakota's second-most populous city.
The Church here
- 1883Four missionaries traveled from house to house across the Dakota farmlands. Newspapers reported positively on their work, even though they were warned that Fargo's mayor might try to stop them.
- 1899Missionaries transferred their work to South Dakota because little progress was being made in North Dakota.
- 1914After a Native American chief began corresponding with missionaries, missionaries taught 108 people at Shell Village and baptized seven converts.
- 1919A Church building was constructed in Sully Lake.
- 1930A Church building was constructed in Grand Forks.
- 1977The Fargo North Dakota Stake was organized, giving every U.S. state a stake within its boundaries.
- 1996The Bismarck North Dakota Stake was created on September 22.
- 2015The South Dakota Rapid City Mission was consolidated into the North Dakota Bismarck Mission.
