About the mission

The Peru Limatambo Mission serves part of the Lima metropolitan area, Peru’s largest urban center and the home of the Limatambo Ward meetinghouse.

Spanish is the mission’s main language. Missionaries serve in a city known for its long history, mild desert climate and rich food traditions.

A short history of the area

The Lima area was occupied by pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, calling it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent republic in 1821.

The Church here

  1. 1956A small Latter-day Saint congregation was organized in Peru in July, and full-time missionaries began preaching in August.
  2. 1956The Church purchased a building in November, which became an early meeting place in Lima.
  3. 1959The Andes Mission was organized with 300 members in five congregations.
  4. 1970The Church organized its first stake in Lima in Limatambo.
  5. 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend in January under the direction of Elder M. Russell Ballard.
