A short history of the area

The valleys of the Rímac, Chillón, and Lurín rivers were home to pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the third to the fifteenth century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, calling it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and has been the capital of the Republic of Peru since independence in 1821.

The Church here

  1. 1956A branch in Lima was organized on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle.
  2. 1956Four missionaries arrived in Lima on August 7 to begin preaching.
  3. 1956A building for branch meetings was purchased in November.
  4. 1959The Andes Mission was established in Lima on November 1. It began with five branches and 300 members.
  5. 1970The Church organized its first stake in Lima in Limatambo.
  6. 1986The Lima Peru Temple was completed.
  7. 1988Seven new stakes were created in Lima in one weekend.
