A short history of the area

The Lima area was home to pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, calling it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent republic in 1821.

  1. 1956A branch in Lima was organized on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle.
  2. 1956Four missionaries arrived in Peru on August 7.
  3. 1959The Andes Mission was established in Lima on November 1. It began with five congregations and 300 members.
  4. 1970The first stake in Lima was organized on February 22.
  5. 1971Seminary and institute began in Peru.
  6. 1981The Lima Peru Temple was announced.
  7. 1986The Lima Peru Temple was completed.
  8. 1988Seven stakes were created in Lima in one weekend from 11 existing stakes.
