A short history of the area
Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, naming it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent Republic of Peru in 1821.
The Church here
- 1956A branch in Lima was organized on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle.
- 1956Four missionaries arrived in Lima on August 7: Darwin Thomas, Edward T. Hall, Donald L. Hokanson, and Shirrel M. Plowman.
- 1956A building for branch meetings was purchased in November.
- 1959The Andes Mission was organized in Lima on November 1, with five branches and 300 members.
- 1961The Andes Mission was divided on October 1 to create the Chilean Mission.
- 1970Ecuador was separated from the Andes Mission, which then administered only Peru and was renamed the Peru Mission.
- 1974The mission was renamed the Peru Lima Mission.
- 1977The Peru Lima Mission was divided into the Peru Lima South and Peru Lima North Missions.
- 1988Seven stakes were created in Lima in one weekend in January by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
