About the mission

The Peru Lima Northwest Mission is based in Lima, Peru's capital on the Pacific coast. Lima is a large urban center with a mild desert climate and a long history reaching from pre-Inca cultures to the modern republic.

Spanish is the main language for missionary work and daily life.

A short history of the area

The valleys of the Rímac, Chillón and Lurín rivers were home to pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, naming it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent Republic of Peru in 1821.

The Church here

  1. 1956A branch was organized in Lima on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle of the Quorum of the Twelve.
  2. 1956Four missionaries arrived on August 7, and missionary preaching began in Peru.
  3. 1956A building for branch meetings was purchased in November.
  4. 1959The Andes Mission was established in Lima on November 1, with five branches and 300 members.
  5. 1981The Lima Peru Temple was announced.
  6. 1986The Lima Peru Temple was completed and dedicated.
  7. 1988Seven new stakes were created in Lima in one weekend from 11 functioning stakes.
