About the mission

Legazpi, Albay, is the capital city of Albay province in the Philippines. The city shares its name with Miguel López de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador connected with the early Spanish settlement of the Philippines.

Missionaries use Tagalog and Cebuano in their work. Both are important Philippine languages, and families may hear either one during a missionary’s service.

A short history of the area

Legazpi, Albay, is the capital city of Albay province. The city’s name is associated with Miguel López de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador who founded the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines.

Miguel López de Legazpi’s expedition reached the Philippines in 1565. In 1571, he conquered Manila and made it the capital of the Spanish colony.

The Church here

1898The first attempt to introduce the Church in the Philippines was made by Willard Call and George Seaman, American servicemen from Utah who had been set apart as missionaries.
1940s-1950sA few Filipinos joined the Church.
1961Missionary work began in earnest, following the official registration of the Church and the opening of the islands for missionary work.
1960sBy the end of the decade, the Church had a presence on eight major islands.
1973The first stake in the Philippines was organized.
1984The country’s first temple was dedicated.
1990sChurch membership grew to more than a quarter of a million members.
