About the mission

The Utah St. George Mission is based in St. George, Utah, in the southwestern part of the state. St. George is known as Utah’s Dixie and lies in the northeastern Mojave Desert.

Missionaries speak English and Spanish.

A short history of the area

St. George was founded in 1861 as part of a Latter-day Saint cotton mission directed by Erastus Snow. About 300 families were called to the Dixie mission, and the settlement was named for Church apostle George A. Smith. St. George was incorporated on January 17, 1862.

The city grew in a dry region near the Pine Valley Mountains and the Arizona border. Today it is Utah’s fifth-most populous city and the largest Utah city outside the Wasatch Front. It is also a popular retirement destination and vacation area.

1862St. George was incorporated on January 17.
1869The St. George Stake was organized on November 7.
1877The St. George Temple was dedicated.
1974A Church-wide policy led to the St. George Stake being renamed the St. George Utah Stake.
2001St. George hosted the Ironman World Championship, the first time the event was held outside Hawai’i.
2021St. George hosted the Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
