A short history of the area

Barcelona's earliest settlement history reaches back thousands of years. Archaeological remains, including tombs and dwellings, date to earlier than 5000 BC. Tradition connects the city with Punic settlers, while some historians link its name to Hamilcar Barca. Roman builders later reshaped the town around Mons Taber.

In 801, Barcelona became the seat of the Carolingian Hispanic March after being conquered by Louis, the son of Charlemagne. The city was sacked in 985, joined in dynastic union with Aragon in 1137, and hosted the Summer Olympics in 1992. Barcelona was designated UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2024 through 2026.

  1. 1966On November 2, Elder Marion G. Romney organized an official congregation in Venezuela.
  2. 1967Missionaries first arrived from the Costa Rica Mission, and the first convert was baptized in February.
  3. 1971The Venezuela Mission was created in Caracas, with membership reaching 1,259.
  4. 1975President Spencer W. Kimball visited Venezuela, where about 4,000 members met in 23 congregations.
  5. 1979Venezuela had nearly 5,000 Church members.
  6. 1994The Venezuela Barcelona Mission was created.
