A short history of the area

Norfolk was established as a colonial seaport in 1682 and was incorporated as a city in 1845. During the Revolutionary War, it became the capital of Virginia under Royal Governor John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. Much of the city was later destroyed by naval cannon fire and fires.

Norfolk grew as a major port and naval center. Naval Station Norfolk was established in 1917 and remains the world's largest naval base. The city is part of Hampton Roads, a region sometimes called Tidewater.

The Church here

  1. 1839Jedediah M. Grant arrived in Virginia and found strong curiosity about the Church, receiving three speaking invitations for every one he could fill.
  2. 1841Approximately 80 members of the Church lived in Virginia.
  3. After 1842Missionary R. H. Kinnamon traveled to nine Virginia counties and baptized more than 100 people.
  4. 1883Missionaries J. Golden Kimball and Charles Welch baptized Peter Mason and his family in Rockbridge County. Their conversion helped lead to a congregation among the Rockbridge Native American community.
  5. 1957The Church established its first stake in Virginia, in Richmond.
  6. 1974The Washington D.C. Temple was dedicated in Kensington, Maryland, serving Church members in Virginia and other eastern states.
  7. 2018The Church announced construction of a temple in the Richmond area.
  8. 2021President Dallin H. Oaks delivered an address on religious freedom at the University of Virginia.
  9. 2022The Washington D.C. Temple was rededicated on August 14.
