A short history of the area
Today, Adelaide is Australia’s fifth-most populous city. It is known as the City of Churches and has a ring of parklands around its city centre. The city is also recognised as a UNESCO City of Music.

- 1840William Barratt arrived in Adelaide at age 17 and helped introduce the restored gospel to Australia.
- 1842William Barratt baptized Robert Beauchamp Dolling, the first known person baptized in Australia.
- 1844The first Latter-day Saint branch in Australia was organized.
- 1851The Australian Mission was organized in Sydney.
- 1960Stakes were organized in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, among the first stakes organized outside North America.
- 1968The Australian West Mission, now the Australia Adelaide Mission, was established.
- 1984The Sydney Australia Temple, the first temple in Australia, was dedicated.
- 2003Temples in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and Brisbane were in operation.
