A short history of the area
Sydney was declared a city in 1842 and became the capital of New South Wales when the Australian colonies federated in 1901. The city is known for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, its many beaches, and its role as host of the 2000 Summer Olympics.
The Church here
- 1840William Barratt, a 17-year-old British convert, introduced the restored gospel to Australia.
- 1844The first branch in Australia was organized at Montefiores by Andrew Anderson.
- 1851John Murdock and Charles W. Wandell arrived in Sydney and established the Australian Mission.
- 1904The first Church-owned meetinghouse in Australia was dedicated.
- 1960The first Australian stake was organized in Sydney, with stakes organized in Brisbane and Melbourne later that year.
- 1984The Sydney Australia Temple, the first temple in Australia, was dedicated.
