About the mission

The Brazil Belem Mission is based in Belém and serves cities in Pará and Amapá, including Abaetetuba, Ananindeua, Belém, Bragança, Capanema, Castanhal, Marituba, Óbidos, Oriximiná, Santarém, Macapá, and Santana.

Portuguese is the language spoken throughout the mission. Missionaries will find it useful in daily conversations, Church meetings, and service.

A short history of the area

Belém was founded on January 12, 1616, by Portuguese captain-general Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco. The settlement grew around a wooden fort called Presépio, now known as Forte do Castelo. It was the first European colony on the Amazon and became part of Brazil in 1775.

Belém received city status in 1655 and became the capital when Pará was separated from Maranhão in 1772. The city later grew as a commercial center during the Amazon rubber boom and is known as the City of Mango Trees.

The Church here

  1. 1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil in response to requests from German Church members living there.
  2. 1930sAnti-German sentiment led the government to ban German in public. Church services soon changed to Portuguese, and some German-language materials were destroyed.
  3. 1940The Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was first published.
  4. 1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
  5. 1978 onwardHundreds of thousands of people were baptized in Brazil, and wards and stakes became established throughout the country.
  6. 2017The Brasília Brazil Temple, identified as Brazil's 10th temple, was announced on April 2.
