About the mission

The Brazil Manaus North Mission is centered in Manaus, a major city in the Brazilian Amazon. Manaus is known as the Heart of the Amazon and the City of the Forest.

Portuguese is the language spoken in the mission and throughout Brazil.

A short history of the area

Manaus began around the Fort of São José do Rio Negro, built by the Portuguese in 1668 and 1669. In 1832, the settlement was named Manaus, after the Indigenous Manaós people. It became a city in 1848 and returned to the name Manaus in 1856.

The city grew during the late-19th-century rubber boom. In 1967, Brazil created the Manaus Free Trade Zone, bringing new investment and helping the city grow. Today, Manaus is one of the largest cities in the Amazon rainforest.

1928Missionaries began preaching in southern Brazil after German members requested Church support.
1940The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published.
1966The first stake in South America was created in São Paulo.
1967Church activity began in Manaus.
1978The first Latter-day Saint congregation in Manaus was organized.
1988The first stake in Manaus, the Manaus Brazil Stake, was organized.
1990The Brazil Manaus Mission opened on July 1.
2017The Brasília Brazil Temple was announced on April 2.

The Solimões and Negro rivers meet near Manaus and flow side by side for about 6 to 9 kilometers without mixing.
The Amazonas Opera House was built with European bricks, French glass, and Italian marble, then reopened for live opera in 1997.
The pied tamarin, a monkey found only in the Manaus region, lives in Mindu Municipal Park and is at high risk of extinction.
