A short history of the area
The city became an important gateway to southern Chile after the railway connected it with Santiago in 1912. The 1960 Valdivia earthquake destroyed much of Puerto Montt, including its port and train station. In 1979, Puerto Montt became the capital of the Los Lagos Region.

- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family helped secure permission for missionaries to enter Chile and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized.
- 1960Chilean Saints helped with disaster relief after earthquakes in Concepción and Valdivia.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized, with A. Delbert Palmer as its first mission president.
- 1972Chile’s first stake was organized in Santiago on November 19.
- 1982The Puerto Montt Stake was organized.
- 1983The Santiago temple was dedicated, becoming the first temple in Spanish-speaking South America.
- 2004The Chilean government recognized the Church for its efforts to fight poverty.
