A short history of the area

Neuquén was officially founded on September 12, 1904, when the capital of the territory was moved from Chos Malal. The Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway reached the area in 1899 and reached Neuquén three years later after a bridge was built.

The city stands west of the meeting point of the Limay and Neuquén rivers, which form the Río Negro. Oil discoveries in the 1960s brought new importance and helped fuel major growth. Neuquén is now the largest city in Patagonia.

1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
1925Apostle Melvin J. Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the gospel and helped establish the South American Mission.
1935The South American Mission was divided into the Argentine Mission and the Brazilian Mission.
1940sForeign missionaries were withdrawn from Argentina, and local members led the branches and mission organization.
1946Foreign missionaries returned to Argentina.
1966The first stake in Argentina was organized in Buenos Aires.
1990The Trelew Mission was organized in Argentina.
1993The Trelew Mission was relocated to Neuquén.
2018A temple to be built in Salta was announced.
