A short history of the area
The Vridi Canal was completed in 1951, connecting the Ébrié Lagoon to the sea and helping Abidjan become an important seaport. Abidjan remained the capital when Côte d’Ivoire became independent in 1960. Yamoussoukro became the official political capital in 1983, while Abidjan remained the economic capital.
The Church here
- 1980Lucien Affoué joined the Church in France, and Philippe Assard joined the Church in Germany.
- 1987Côte d’Ivoire was dedicated for the preaching of the gospel, and the first baptisms in the country took place.
- 1988Full-time missionaries arrived in Côte d’Ivoire, and the Church created branches in Abidjan, Bouake, and Yamoussoukro within five years.
- 1989The first district in Côte d’Ivoire was organized in October.
- 1993The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan Mission was organized in May.
- 1997The country’s first stake, the Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire Stake, was organized on August 17.
- 2014The Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan West Mission was organized from a division of the original Côte d’Ivoire Abidjan Mission.
