A short history of the area
Copenhagen became Denmark’s capital around 1416. The city is known as the “City of Spires,” and its Danish name, København, means “merchants’ harbour.” Its history includes the Copenhagen Fire of 1728 and the British bombardment of 1807.

- 1842The first Danish Latter-day Saints were baptized in the United States.
- 1849Peter O. Hansen and Elder Erastus Snow were called to open a mission in Scandinavia.
- 1850Peter O. Hansen arrived in Copenhagen and began preaching.
- 1850Elder Erastus Snow arrived in Copenhagen and organized the Scandinavian Mission.
- 1850The first baptisms in Denmark took place on August 12 near Copenhagen.
- 1850The Copenhagen Branch, the first branch in Denmark, was organized on September 15.
- 1851The Danish translation of the Book of Mormon became the first translation printed in a language other than English.
