A short history of the area
A major fire destroyed the city in 1624, after which King Christian IV ordered a new city to be built near Akershus Fortress. The city was called Christiania until 1925, when its name changed back to Oslo.
The Church here
- 1850The Scandinavian Mission became one of the first missions where missionaries taught the gospel in a language other than English.
- 1851Hans F. Petersen extended the Scandinavian Mission's work into Norway. Svend Larsen and another recent convert also began missionary activity, and the first baptism took place before the end of the year.
- 1852The first two congregations were created. Branches were organized at Risør on July 16 and Fredrikstad on July 25.
- 1853The Christiania Branch, later known as the Oslo Branch, was organized on December 8.
- 1920The Norwegian Mission was created on April 1, with August S. Schow as its first mission president.
- 1937The first issue of the Norwegian-language Church periodical Lys over Norge was published in Oslo.
- 1946The government granted the Church permission to preach in Norway.
- 1988The Church was officially registered as a religious denomination in Norway.
