A short history of the area
Helsinki’s city center moved to the Vironniemi peninsula in 1640. Russia moved Finland’s capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812. Today, Helsinki is Finland’s most populous municipality and a major Baltic Sea city.
The Church here
- 1850s-1860sA small number of Finns living abroad joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- 1875Church leaders approved a request from Finnish members to send missionaries to their relatives in Finland. Swedish missionaries Carl and Johan Sundström were sent to Vaasa.
- 1876The first convert baptism in Finland took place.
- 1947Missionaries began studying Finnish in January, and the Finnish Mission was officially organized on September 1.
- 1950sThe Book of Mormon was published in Finnish, and Finnish Saints organized their first temple trip for the dedication of the Bern Switzerland Temple.
- 1977The Helsinki Finland Stake, the first stake in Finland, was organized on October 16.
- 1989Finnish members took the lead in carrying the gospel to Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia, after travel restrictions eased in the Soviet Union.
- 2006Finnish Saints joined with Saints from Estonia and Russia to celebrate the dedication of a temple in Helsinki.
