A short history of the area

Stockholm has been settled since the Stone Age. Birger Jarl is said to have founded the city in 1252, and that year is also the earliest written mention of Stockholm. The city grew around the islands of present-day Gamla Stan, or Old Town.

Stockholm became Sweden’s official capital in 1634. Today, the city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea, with waterways and green spaces forming a large part of the city.

1843John E. Forsgren, a Swede, joined the Church in Boston.
1850John E. Forsgren returned to Sweden as the first missionary to his homeland.
1860Branches of the Church had spread around Sweden.
1905The Swedish Mission was organized, with Peter Matson, a Swedish convert, as president.
1920Visas for Latter-day Saint missionaries were temporarily discontinued.
1966Festinord, an annual young adult conference for members from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland, was first held in Stockholm.
1975The first stake in Sweden was organized in Stockholm.
1985The Stockholm Sweden Temple was dedicated in July as the first temple in Scandinavia.
