A short history of the area
Riga later came under Swedish rule and then Russian rule. Latvia declared independence in 1918, with Riga as its capital. The city is now Latvia's largest city and is known for its historic centre and Art Nouveau architecture.
The Church here
- 1903Mischa Markow preached the gospel in Riga.
- 1992Gvido and Velga Senkāns moved to Riga, establishing a lasting Church presence in Latvia, followed shortly by the first missionaries.
- 1992James E. Faust dedicated Latvia for the preaching of the gospel on March 17. The first branch was organized two months later.
- 1993The Latvia Riga Mission was created on July 1, covering Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
- 2001The Book of Mormon was published in Latvian, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the first Church-constructed meetinghouse in Latvia.
- 2002The mission was renamed the Baltic Mission on July 1.
- 2019Latvia had roughly 1,000 Latter-day Saints, with branches in Riga, Liepaja, and Daugavpils.
