A short history of the area

Warsaw’s earliest fortified settlements were at Bródno in the ninth and tenth centuries and Jazdów in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. After Jazdów was raided, a new settlement grew beside a fishing village called Warszowa. The modern city was established around 1300, and Warsaw received city rights that year.

Warsaw became the capital of the Masovian Duchy in 1413. In 1596, Sigismund III Vasa moved the royal court from Kraków to Warsaw. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, including about 85 percent of the city during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. The reconstructed Old Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

  1. 1892Latter-day Saint missionaries established the Church in the territory of modern-day Poland.
  2. 1909The Wroclaw Branch was organized.
  3. 1921The Wroclaw Branch had been divided into three congregations.
  4. 1961The Church officially registered with the Polish government.
  5. 1977The first missionary couple to serve in Poland, Matthew and Marian Ciembronowicz, arrived.
  6. 1988The first young missionaries, Elders Matthew Binns and Stephen Thomas, arrived in January.
  7. 1990The Poland Warsaw Mission was established.
  8. 1991A meetinghouse in Warsaw was dedicated on June 22.
  9. 2016Mateusz Turek, a native of Poland, and his wife, Adrienne, were called to preside over the Poland Warsaw Mission.
