A short history of the area
Buda, Pest, and Óbuda were officially united on November 17, 1873, creating Budapest. The city became Hungary's capital in 1361, was occupied by the Ottomans in 1541, and was a focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
The Church here
- 1885Elders Thomas Biessinger and Paul Hammer became the first missionaries of the Church to come to Hungary. They left after about a month.
- 1887Mischa Markow became the first known Hungarian citizen to be baptized after joining the Church in Constantinople, now Istanbul.
- 1914At the start of World War I, the Church recalled its missionaries from Europe, including Hungary. Organized activity then ceased for more than seven decades.
- 1987On April 19, President Russell M. Nelson dedicated Hungary for missionary work on Budapest's Gellert Hill.
- 1988The Church received official recognition in Hungary on June 1, and the first missionaries arrived.
- 1989Hungary's first meetinghouse was dedicated in October by President Thomas S. Monson.
- 1990The Hungary Budapest Mission was created in June.
- 2006The Budapest Hungary Stake, Hungary's first stake, was organized on June 4.
- 2019President Russell M. Nelson announced the construction of a temple in Hungary in April.
