A short history of the area
The Romans made Serdica an important city, and Khan Krum brought it into the First Bulgarian Empire in 809. The Ottoman Empire seized the city in the late fourteenth century. Sofia became the capital of the Third Bulgarian State in 1879.
The Church here
- 1900Mischa Markow and Argir Dimitrov preached in Sofia, but no one was baptized during that effort.
- 1988Church leaders met with Bulgarian government officials about establishing the Church in Bulgaria.
- 1990Six local converts were baptized in Sofia on November 24.
- 1991Kiril and Nevenka Kiriakov presided over the newly created Bulgaria Sofia Mission beginning July 1.
- 1991The Church was officially recognized by the Bulgarian government on July 10.
- 1999The Book of Mormon was published in Bulgarian.
- 2000The first meetinghouse in Bulgaria was dedicated in Sofia.
- 2001A meetinghouse was dedicated in Plovdiv.
- 2014Bulgarian Saints helped with cleanup efforts after devastating flooding.
