About the mission

The Albania Tirana Mission is based in Tirana, the capital of Albania. Tirana is the country's largest urban center and a gateway to its mountains, lakes, and historic sites.

Albanian is the main language of the mission and the country. Missionaries and families may hear local differences in pronunciation and dialect, including the Gheg name Tirona for Tirana.

A short history of the area

The area around Tirana has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The Cave of Pëllumbas contains evidence from the Palaeolithic period, and the area was later associated with the Illyrian kingdom of the Taulantii.

Sylejman Pasha Bargjini founded Tirana in 1614 by building a mosque, a small commercial center, and a hammam. Tirana became Albania's temporary capital in 1920 and its permanent capital in 1925. Today it is known for its sunny climate, nearby mountains, artificial lakes, and busy city life.

July 1996The Albania Tirana Mission was established.
November 1999Local translators completed the Albanian edition of the Book of Mormon.
