About the mission

The Italy Rome Mission is based in Rome, Italy. Rome is the capital city and is known for its ancient landmarks, Catholic heritage, and place at the center of Italian life.

Italian is the language spoken in the mission. Missionaries and families may also hear local Roman expressions and accents in daily conversations.

A short history of the area

According to Roman tradition, Romulus founded Rome on April 21, 753 BC, after the city’s early communities gathered around the Palatine Hill. Archaeological evidence shows that people lived in the area thousands of years earlier. Rome’s early population included Latins, Etruscans, and Sabines.

Rome became the center of the Roman Republic and later the Roman Empire. In 1871, it became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Today, it is also known as the Eternal City and the City of Seven Hills.

The Church here

  1. 1843Joseph Toronto, born Giuseppe Taranto, became the first known Italian convert to the Church after being baptized in Boston, Massachusetts.
  2. 1849Joseph Toronto accompanied Apostle Lorenzo Snow and others as they opened missionary work in Italy.
  3. 1867The first mission in Italy was closed.
  4. 1910Vincenzo di Francesca gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon while living in New York City.
  5. 1950sThe Church was reestablished in Italy, and Italian-speaking branches were formed in Brescia and Palermo.
  6. 1965Missionary work formally began again in Italy on February 27, when Italian-speaking missionaries were sent from the Swiss Mission to the newly created Italian zone.
  7. 1966The Italian Mission was reestablished with headquarters in Rome.
  8. 2019The Rome Italy Temple was dedicated in seven sessions from March 10 to March 12. All Apostles of the Church participated in the dedicatory services.
