A short history of the area
From 286 to 402 AD, Milan served as the capital of the western Roman Empire. Milan later became an important Renaissance city, passed through French and Austrian control, and became part of the Kingdom of Italy after national unification in 1861.
The Church here
- 1843Joseph Toronto, born Giuseppe Taranto, became the first known Italian convert to the Church after being baptized in Boston.
- 1849Joseph Toronto accompanied Lorenzo Snow and other missionaries when they opened missionary work in Italy.
- 1965Missionary work formally began again in Italy when 20 Italian-speaking missionaries were sent from the Swiss Mission to an Italian zone headquartered in Milan.
- 1966The Italian Mission was organized with headquarters in Rome, and Elder Ezra Taft Benson rededicated Italy for the preaching of the gospel.
- 1971The Italian Mission was divided into the Italy North and Italy South Missions.
- 1974The Italy North Mission was renamed the Italy Milan Mission.
- 1981The Milan Italy Stake was organized as the first stake in Italy.
- 2019The Rome Italy Temple was dedicated from March 10 to March 12 in seven dedicatory sessions. All Apostles participated in the dedicatory services.
