A short history of the area

Athens has been continuously inhabited for at least 5,000 years. By 1400 BC, it was an important center of the Mycenaean civilization, and the Acropolis served as a major fortress. In 508 BC, Cleisthenes introduced reforms that helped shape the development of democracy.

Athens became the capital of modern Greece in 1834. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Today, Athens is the southernmost capital on the European mainland and includes the important port city of Piraeus.

The Church here

1905Rigas Pofantis, a printer from Athens, was baptized after being taught by the president of the Church’s mission in Turkey.
1906Joseph F. Thorup and Bertrand W. Clayton became the first full-time missionaries assigned to Greece.
1950sGreek-American Church members in Salt Lake City organized the Hellenic Latter-day Saint Society to maintain ties with their Greek heritage and homeland.
1965Church leaders organized a small congregation in Athens.
1967The Athens congregation was reorganized, and the Athens Branch was created on June 18.
1990The Greece Athens Mission was established in July.
1999Construction of Greece’s first meetinghouse was completed in May.
2016Elder D. Todd Christofferson visited Greece, stood on Mars Hill, and read Paul’s teachings recorded in the New Testament.
2018The Greece Athens Mission was closed when Greece became part of the Adriatic South Mission.
