About the mission

The Ecuador Quito North Mission is based in Quito, Ecuador. Quito is the capital city and the main urban center of a country with a growing Church presence.

Spanish is the mission's main language. Ecuador also has Indigenous communities where Kichwa is spoken, and the Church published a Kichwa translation of selections from the Book of Mormon in 1980.

A short history of the area

Quito's earliest known human traces date to about 8000 BC. Sedentary settlements appeared between 4400 and 1600 BC, and the Cotocollao settlement was established around 1500 BC. The Inca later made Quito the capital of their northern region.

The Spanish refounded Quito at its present location on December 6, 1534. Quito became a center of independence in 1809, and Antonio José de Sucre's victory at the Battle of Pichincha in 1822 established the city's independence. Quito's historic center became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

  1. 1965The first missionaries arrived in Ecuador after Elder Spencer W. Kimball directed the beginning of missionary work.
  2. 1970The Ecuador Mission was organized in Quito.
  3. 1978The first stake in Ecuador was organized in Guayaquil.
  4. 1980The Church published a Kichwa translation of selections from the Book of Mormon.
  5. 1981The first all-Amerindian stake in Latin America was organized in Otavalo.
  6. 1999The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple was dedicated.
  7. 2013The Quito Ecuador North Mission was organized.
  8. 2022The Quito Ecuador Temple was dedicated on November 20.
