A short history of the area
In 1166, Peter de Bermingham received a charter to hold a market, helping create the planned market town around the Bull Ring. Birmingham became a city in 1889 and later became known for manufacturing, inventions, canals, parks, and cultural diversity.
The Church here
- 1837Seven missionaries, including two Apostles, were sent to Britain, the Church's first overseas mission assignment.
- 1837Missionaries arrived in England on July 19 and preached in Preston on July 23. Nine converts were baptized on July 30, followed by 50 more converts the next week.
- 1840The Gadfield Elm Conference was organized on June 14 as local congregations were grouped into conferences.
- 1929The British Mission headquarters moved to Birmingham from Liverpool.
- 1961The England Birmingham Mission was organized on March 6.
- 1998The Preston Temple opened in June near the site of the first preaching in England.
- 2000The rebuilt Gadfield Elm Chapel was rededicated in April by Jeffrey R. Holland.
- 2012The historic Hyde Park Chapel in London was rededicated in July after remodeling.
- 2019RootsTech held its first family discovery conference outside Salt Lake City in London, with nearly 10,000 attendees from around the world.
