A short history of the area
Bristol became a city in 1542. Today it is the most populous city in South West England. It is known for its oceanic climate, seven hills, distinctive Bristolian dialect, and long history as a port and trading center.
The Church here
- 1837The first seven missionaries sent overseas by the Church arrived in England on July 19, including two members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
- 1837Missionaries preached in Preston on July 23, and nine converts were baptized on July 30 before more than 8,000 onlookers.
- 1837Fifty more converts were baptized the following week.
- February 1, 1962The Southwest British Mission was organized as a division of the British Mission.
- June 10, 1970The mission was renamed the England Southwest Mission.
- June 20, 1974The mission became the England Bristol Mission.
- 2001Two missionaries serving in the England Bristol Mission died in a car accident.
- July 1, 2002The England Bristol Mission was consolidated.
