A short history of the area
London was badly affected by the Great Plague of 1665–1666, which killed about 100,000 people. The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of the wooden-built city. In modern times, London hosted the Summer Olympics in 1908, 1948, and 2012.
The Church here
- 1837Seven missionaries, including two members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, were sent to Britain, the Church’s first overseas mission field.
- 1840Wilford Woodruff, George A. Smith, and Heber C. Kimball went to London to begin missionary work in the capital.
- 1841Elders Heber C. Kimball and Wilford Woodruff organized the London Conference on February 14, with Lorenzo Snow as president.
- 1928The British Mission was organized to operate independently from the European Mission.
- 1932British Mission president James H. Douglas moved the mission headquarters to London.
- Late 1950sA temple was dedicated in London as Church membership in Britain grew.
- 1998The Preston Temple opened in June, near the site of the first preaching in Britain more than 150 years earlier.
- 2012The historic Hyde Park Chapel in London was rededicated after remodeling for worship services and use as a visitor’s center.
- 2013The British Pageant, titled “Truth will prevail,” was performed on the grounds of the Preston Temple.
